This polychrome woodblock print, made during the Jiaqing period (1796–1820) of China's Qing dynasty, illustrates scenes from “Outlaws of the Marsh” (Water Margin), one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, following the adventures of 108 rebel heroes. Popular illustrated prints like this one made beloved episodes from the sprawling novel accessible and decorative for households across Qing-dynasty China. The original is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
