Ming-dynasty court painter Lin Liang rendered this pair of peafowl in ink on silk, pairing a peacock, identifiable by his flamboyant tail, with a peahen who lowers her head beside him in a gesture read as deference. Lin Liang moves between wet and dry brushwork and broad and fine washes to build up the texture of feather and plumage across both birds. The painting dates to the late 1400s or early 1500s, near the end of the artist's career.
