And a Large Bird Descending — Antique Natural History Print

This is a fragment of a longer title, 'And a Large Bird, Descending from the Sky, Hurls Itself against the Topmost Point of Her Hair,' a lithograph by the French Symbolist Odilon Redon. It belongs to his first print series inspired by Gustave Flaubert's 1874 novel The Temptation of Saint Anthony, in which invented monsters and visionary creatures crowd otherworldly scenes. Redon considered imagination 'the messenger of the unconscious,' and this bird is one of his stranger apparitions rather than a study from nature.
