Napoleon ordered the Arc de Triomphe built in 1806 to honor his Grand Army after the victory at Austerlitz, promising his soldiers they would march home beneath a triumphal arch. Designed by Jean-François-Thérèse Chalgrin after Rome's Arch of Titus, construction dragged through Napoleon's fall from power and was not completed until 1836, under the July Monarchy. Standing 164 feet tall at the head of the Champs-Élysées, it has crowned the Paris skyline as one of France's most recognizable monuments ever since.
