This engraving is one of the so-called Mantegna Tarocchi, a set of fifty prints made in Ferrara around 1465 — not actually by Mantegna, and not playing cards — that map the whole Renaissance order of the cosmos, from beggars and kings up through the planets and the muses to the liberal arts. Here Arithmetic, one of the seven liberal arts, reckons the numbers that underlie creation.
