Astronomical Basis of Modern Geography — Antique Art Print

This double-hemisphere world map, Basis Geographiae Recentioris Astronomica, was produced by the Nuremberg mathematician Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr for the celebrated Homann cartographic publishing house in the early eighteenth century. Rather than pure decoration, its surrounding tables list the coordinates of notable cities and landmarks as fixed by contemporary astronomers, largely through observations of eclipses of Jupiter's moons, reflecting the era's push to root geography in precise astronomical measurement rather than guesswork. The result pairs two richly bordered globes of the known world with a small library's worth of scientific data, a hallmark of the Enlightenment-era atlases that made Doppelmayr and Homann famous.
