This print is a surimono — a privately commissioned Japanese woodblock print, produced in small numbers and exchanged among connoisseurs to mark a specific occasion rather than sold on the open market. Baskets brimming with peonies were a favoured surimono subject in the circle of the Edo-period master Katsushika Hokusai; peonies were linked to the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō VII, whose family crest featured the flower, and held a traditional place as the flower of summer in Japanese seasonal art. Surimono were prized for their fine printing and lavish use of metallic pigment and embossing, qualities that set them apart from mass-market woodblock prints of the same era.
