The bird's-eye-view map reached its peak popularity in the decades after the Civil War, when specialized publishing firms sent teams of surveyor-artists crisscrossing the United States and Canada to produce views of even modest towns. A single view might take an artist several days on-site, climbing church steeples and hills for vantage points before filling in the finer details of streets and buildings from memory and notes. Chromolithography made it possible to print these detailed panoramas by the thousands, turning what had been a niche curiosity into a genuine mass-market decorative art.
