Bird's Eye View (3) — Antique Map Print

Producing a bird's-eye-view map was as much a sales operation as an artistic one: a publisher's agent would arrive in town ahead of the artist to sign up local subscribers, often offering a small hand-colored copy or a place in the numbered key as an incentive to pay in advance. Only once enough subscriptions were secured would the artist begin the physical work of surveying the streets and sketching every building. This subscription model meant the finished panorama reflected not just geography but the priorities and pride of the townspeople who funded it.
