The golden age of the American bird's-eye-view map ran roughly from the 1860s to the 1910s, a window bracketed by the growth of lithographic printing on one end and the arrival of the airplane on the other. During those decades, thousands of individual town views were published, documenting communities from major cities down to small rural crossroads. Many of these panoramas survive today only in a handful of copies, making them a valuable window into small-town North American life before the automobile reshaped the landscape.
