By the 1870s and 1880s, dozens of firms specialized in producing bird's-eye-view maps across the United States and Canada, competing to win subscriptions from towns eager to see themselves portrayed on paper. An artist would typically walk every street of a town, sketching each building's silhouette before returning to the studio to assemble the pieces into a single continuous panorama viewed from an imagined height. The finished lithographs were sold both to local residents and by mail to former townspeople who had moved away.
