Because true aerial photography did not exist until the 20th century, 19th-century bird's-eye-view artists had to imagine the aerial perspective entirely by eye, combining ground-level sketches with an intuitive sense of how a town's grid would look from above. The results were rarely perfectly accurate, but they captured a level of individual architectural detail that later aerial photographs could never match. Today these maps are prized less for their precision than for the vivid, almost personal record they preserve of vanished 19th-century streetscapes.
