In the bird-and-flower painting tradition, no plant or creature was chosen at random; nearly every pairing carried a layered meaning that a period viewer would have read at a glance. Plum blossoms paired with bamboo evoked the resilience of the noble Confucian gentleman, the lotus flower stood for purity and moral integrity, and peonies shown with butterflies signalled wealth and happiness, while birds themselves were long seen as messengers moving between heaven and earth. Painters used these combinations much as poets used allusion, building meaning into a composition that could be admired for its beauty and read for its symbolism at once.
