Birds and Flowers — Antique Botanical Print

Bird-and-flower painting began in China but travelled widely, reaching Japan by the Muromachi period of the 14th century and eventually shaping an entire branch of Japanese woodblock printmaking known as kachō-e, or bird-and-flower pictures. Japanese print-makers rendered birds, plants, and blossoms with close observation of nature, and the genre grew so popular among nineteenth-century ukiyo-e artists that it became one of the dominant print categories of the era, alongside landscapes and portraits of beauties. Whether Chinese or Japanese in origin, these images were prized as much for their symbolism as for their decorative charm.
