Painted by Yin Hong, a painter serving in the Ming-dynasty imperial court in the late 1400s, this large hanging scroll gathers a great variety of birds, including a peacock and peahen, beneath a flowering willow in a scene believed to represent spring, possibly from a set devoted to the four seasons. Its grand scale suggests the painting once decorated a palace hall, and some scholars connect its abundance of birds to the classical theme of "a hundred birds admiring the phoenix," a metaphor for harmonious order.
