This lithograph is the first of six prints the British artist C.R.W. Nevinson made in 1917 for The Great War: Britain's Efforts and Ideals, a government-commissioned series meant to show the public how the nation was mobilizing for war. Building Aircraft: Making the Engine takes the viewer inside a British aero-engine factory, its diagonal shafts of machinery and straining workers rendered with the same angular energy Nevinson had brought to Vorticist painting before the war. The series paired six 'Efforts' prints, including this one, with six 'Ideals' prints by other artists.
