Carolina Parrot — Antique Bird Print

The Carolina Parakeet was North America's only native parrot, a vivid green-and-yellow bird once found in flocks across the Southeast and Midwest, feeding on cockleburs and other seed pods. Habitat loss and relentless hunting, flocks would circle back to fallen companions, making them easy targets, drove the species to extinction; the last captive bird died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918. Audubon's plate, showing several birds perched together on a cocklebur stalk, is today one of the most important surviving records of a bird that left no photographs or recordings.
