This plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660), titled Typus Selenographicus, diagrams the phases of the Moon and the geometry of its changing illumination as it circles the Earth. A radiant, face-like Sun anchors the design at top, with the Moon's cycle arranged in a ring around a small central view of the lunar surface itself. It is a reminder that the atlas covered more than star maps and rival cosmologies — Cellarius also devoted plates to the everyday celestial motions that structured the calendar of his own century.
