Cellarius Celestial Chart (13) — Antique Celestial Print

This plate from the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) illustrates the Sun's apparent annual path and its relationship to the Earth's own circles of reference, another of Andreas Cellarius's technical diagrams built around a finely detailed terrestrial globe at the center. Where the atlas's planispheres lay out entire cosmological systems, plates like this one isolate a single astronomical relationship for close study, evidence of how methodically Cellarius organized his survey of the heavens. Cherubs and clouds fill the corners in the same Baroque idiom that runs through every sheet of the atlas.
