This plate, titled Haemisphaerium Stellatum Boreale Antiquum in Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660), maps the northern sky according to the constellation figures handed down from antiquity, rather than the newer groupings some contemporaries were beginning to propose. Mythological figures tumble across the star field in the hand-colored engraving, framed by the cherubs, drapery and scholarly onlookers typical of Cellarius's Baroque borders. The plate is one of many in the atlas that show Cellarius carefully distinguishing between ancient and modern astronomical traditions rather than presenting a single, simplified sky.
