This plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) charts a hemisphere of the northern sky, its constellation figures — drawn in the tradition established by the Dutch engraver Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam — interlocking across the circle in dense Baroque detail. Robed scholars consult globes and instruments in the corners below, a visual reminder that the atlas was meant as both a scientific reference and a showpiece. Originally issued by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam, the plate later circulated in the 1708 Valk and Schenk reissue that kept Cellarius's atlas in print into the eighteenth century.
