This composite plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) lays the northern constellations over a map of the northern lands beneath them, one of several hemispheres in the atlas that fuse sky and Earth into a single image. The figures crowding the circle were drawn from earlier constellation art by Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam, hand-colored and set inside Cellarius's typically ornate Baroque border of cherubs and clouds. Plates like this one, uniting geography and astronomy in one sheet, are part of why the Harmonia Macrocosmica is still ranked among the finest celestial atlases ever produced.
