This plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (Amsterdam, 1660) maps the stars of the southern celestial hemisphere, the half of the sky largely unknown to ancient astronomers and only charted in detail after European voyages into the southern oceans. Cellarius based his constellation figures on earlier models by the Dutch engraver Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam, then set them within his own richly decorated border of clouds, cherubs and classical figures. Hand-finished in watercolor over the engraved line work, plates like this one are a large part of why the atlas is still considered among the most beautiful celestial books ever printed.
