Andreas Cellarius paired each of his flat planispheres with a scenographic, near-perspectival view, and this plate from the 1660 Harmonia Macrocosmica renders the Copernican universe that way, tilting the Sun-centered spheres so the eye seems to look into the solar system at an angle. It is a striking piece of Baroque scientific illustration, marrying precise astronomical diagramming with the theatrical ornament — banners, cherubs, allegorical figures — that made this atlas famous. Cellarius drew on earlier constellation and cosmological imagery circulating in the Dutch print trade, but the scenographic treatment of the three world systems was very much his own innovation.
