This engraving from Andreas Cellarius's 1660 Harmonia Macrocosmica lays out the Copernican system, with the Sun fixed at the center and the Earth reduced to one planet among several circling it — the heliocentric model that had upended a millennium and a half of geocentric orthodoxy. Cellarius presented it, like the rival Ptolemaic and Tychonic schemes, without taking sides, letting the reader weigh the era's competing pictures of the universe side by side. Engraved in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age of cartography, the plate is framed with the ornate scrollwork and figures typical of the atlas's Baroque presentation.
