Cellarius Celestial Chart (26) — Antique Celestial Print

This is the allegorical frontispiece of Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica, the celestial atlas first published in Amsterdam in 1660 by Johannes Janssonius. Cherubs draw back a banner inscribed with the book's title while, below, history's great astronomers — Ptolemy, Copernicus, Tycho Brahe and their circle — gather with globes, armillary spheres and a compass to debate the order of the heavens. It is a fittingly theatrical overture for a book still regarded as one of the most beautiful celestial atlases ever printed. Cellarius, a Dutch-German rector and mathematics teacher working in Hoorn, conceived the atlas as the first installment of a larger cosmographical history that he never lived to complete.
