Cherry blossoms, or sakura, have symbolized the beauty and brevity of life in Japan since the Heian court first gathered to view them in the ninth century, and hanami (flower-viewing) remains a defining spring ritual to this day. This scene, in the manner of the Edo-period woodblock artist Utagawa Toyokuni, captures that seasonal celebration directly: figures in fluttering kimono lean into the wind as petals stream past, tying poems and prayers to the branches in the custom of the season. Because the bloom lasts only a week or two, sakura became shorthand in Japanese art and poetry for mono no aware — the bittersweet awareness that beauty is fleeting.
