This scene illustrates Act Ten of Kanadehon Chūshingura ('The Treasury of Loyal Retainers'), the most celebrated of all kabuki and puppet plays, based on the real 1701–03 vendetta of forty-seven masterless samurai. Act Ten shifts away from the samurai entirely to focus on Amakawaya Gihei, a merchant secretly arming the retainers for their raid, who proves his loyalty by staying silent even when his enemies threaten his infant son. Rarely staged today, the act was written to show that steadfast honor could be found outside the warrior class as well as within it.
