Claude Lorrain etched this maritime harbor view, also known by its French title Le Port de Mer au Fanal, sometime between about 1638 and 1641. It shows boats, fishermen, and a lighthouse within one of the imagined Mediterranean harbors Claude returned to again and again — scenes that pair close observation of ships and light with an idealized, classical sense of order. Trained in Rome under the landscape painter Agostino Tassi and based there for nearly his entire life, Claude became renowned for exactly this kind of luminous, atmospheric harbor composition, in both paintings and prints. This etching belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago's Clarence Buckingham Collection.

Printed edge to edge on a soft, durable woven area rug with a comfortable, non-slip feel.
