This small 1633 etching, now in the Art Institute of Chicago's Charles Deering Collection, shows brigands accosting a traveler within a rocky landscape — a rare brush with narrative drama in Claude Lorrain's usually tranquil pastoral world. It dates from his early years working in Rome, when he was still developing his etching technique alongside his landscape painting. The plate is one of a small group of related brigand studies Claude produced around the same time, offering a glimpse of the wilder, more turbulent side of the Roman countryside he otherwise rendered as idyllic.
Printed edge to edge on a soft, durable woven area rug with a comfortable, non-slip feel.
