Etched around 1630–1633 and held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this small sheet gathers a seated woman alongside a scatter of other quick studies on a single plate, reading like a page pulled straight from Claude Lorrain's sketchbook. It dates from his formative years in Rome, when he was still refining his draftsmanship and beginning to use etching to record figures and motifs he would later place into finished landscapes. Sheets like this reveal the working method behind Claude's populated pastoral scenes: quick studies, tried out on paper, ahead of the idealized settings they'd eventually inhabit.
