Claude Lorrain etched this biblical scene around 1630–1631; an impression is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, depicting Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus journeying to safety after Herod's massacre of the innocents. It was a subject Claude returned to repeatedly over his career, in both paintings and prints, less as an exercise in narrative drama than as an occasion to build an expansive, atmospheric landscape around the small traveling family.
