This 1663 etching, held by the National Gallery of Art (Rosenwald Collection), the Art Institute of Chicago, and Princeton University Art Museum among others, presents a low, sweeping view of the Roman Campagna with goats resting in the foreground, tall cross-hatched trees, and a hilltop village on the horizon. Made late in Claude Lorrain's career, it shows his etching technique at its most refined, using fine linework alone to conjure texture, depth, and atmosphere in a purely pastoral scene, without any mythological or biblical pretext. Like The Cowherd, it treats humble rural life as a worthy subject in its own right.

This has gotten more compliments than anything else we own. There is more going on in The Goatherd than I noticed on the website. It has me wanting to redo the rest of the den to match. The colors are deep without looking oversaturated. Our apartment gets almost no light until noon and it still reads clearly.
