The Connecticut Warbler is one of the most elusive of North American warblers, a plump, long-winged bird that walks rather than hops and stays low in dense thickets and boggy woodland, rarely showing itself well even to determined birders. Audubon collected his specimens along the banks of the Delaware River and once watched two Connecticut Warblers swoop low over water to snatch spiders from the surface, swallow-like behavior he never saw repeated. This male-and-female plate was engraved by Robert Havell Jr. for The Birds of America (1827-1838).
