Covent Garden Flower Women — Antique Botanical Print

Flower selling was a fixture of London's Covent Garden market from the seventeenth century into the twentieth, and the flower women who worked its stalls and pavements became a recognizable type in Victorian London — a livelihood often passed down through generations of the same family, for long hours and meagre pay. This image belongs to that documentary tradition, close in spirit to the 1877 photographs the Scottish photographer John Thomson made for “Street Life in London,” one of the earliest works of social documentary photography. These real flower sellers are widely credited as the inspiration for Eliza Doolittle, the Covent Garden flower girl of George Bernard Shaw's “Pygmalion,” later reimagined as “My Fair Lady.”
