David Bates (1840-1921) was an English landscape painter associated with the Birmingham School, known for open-air scenes of the rivers and woodlands of the English Midlands and Wales. He trained as a porcelain painter at the Royal Worcester works before turning to landscape painting full-time in 1880, going on to exhibit at the Royal Academy and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Painted in 1889, “Autumn River Scene, The Brook” captures a quiet stretch of water bordered by autumn foliage, in the closely observed, naturalistic style Bates was known for. The painting is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

It has completely changed how the breakfast nook feels. My guests ask about autumn river scene before anything else in the house. It transformed a breakfast nook that had felt unfinished for years. My partner is hard to impress and even he was taken with it. This one is staying with us a long time.
It fills the space in the primary bedroom the way I hoped it would.
This made the whole team smile. Thank you for taking the time, and enjoy it.
This has been the easiest online order I have placed in years. The detail in autumn river scene holds up with my face inches away. The condition on arrival was flawless, right down to the corners. It has become the thing I point to when people compliment the house. Thank you for making something this good. 🙂
My order came a day early, which never happens. The detail in autumn river scene holds up from a couple of feet away. The quality of the materials is obvious the moment you handle it. It gave the stairwell the anchor it was missing.
My whole family has opinions about the house and everyone agreed on this one. Every line in autumn river scene is crisp, even in the busiest areas. It came with a handwritten thank you that made the whole thing feel personal. It is the best thing in the stairwell now.
