David Lucas engraved this mezzotint after John Constable's views of the River Stour, the Suffolk waterway that ran past Flatford Mill, the mill owned by the artist's father and the setting for many of Constable's best-loved paintings. The scene looks along the river toward Flatford Bridge, with sailing barges on the water and the church at Dedham visible in the distance, closely based on Constable's large painting “View on the Stour near Dedham.” Published in 1831 as part of Lucas's twenty-two-print series “English Landscape Scenery,” it is prized for its tonal subtlety in capturing the working agricultural waterway Constable knew intimately from childhood. The Stour valley he returned to throughout his career is still known today as “Constable Country.”

Printed edge to edge on a soft, durable woven area rug with a comfortable, non-slip feel.
