Egypt and Nubia Volume — Ancient Art Print

In 1838, the Scottish painter David Roberts set out on an eleven-month journey up the Nile and into Nubia, filling sketchbooks with the temples, tombs, and ruins he found along the way. Those drawings became Egypt and Nubia, published in three folio volumes between 1846 and 1849, with Louis Haghe translating Roberts' watercolours into lithographs and William Brockedon supplying the historical descriptions. The first volume opens with Roberts' view of the entrance to the great rock-cut temple at Abu Simbel, paired with an ornamental title vignette introducing the whole undertaking — one of the most ambitious illustrated publishing projects of the Victorian age.
