This gum tempera and gold painting, made around 1765 in the Pahari hill kingdoms of northern India, illustrates a scene from the Ramayana (Rama's Journey), showing Rama and Sita enthroned as they receive homage from their monkey and bear allies after their triumphant war. Pahari painting of this era was celebrated for its lyrical color and emotional warmth, and the Ramayana — one of India's great epics — was a favorite subject for illustrated manuscripts across Rajput courts.
