Eucalyptus is a vast genus of some 900 species, nearly all native to Australia, where certain species, such as Eucalyptus regnans, rank among the tallest flowering plants on Earth at close to 100 meters. Long before European settlement, Aboriginal communities used eucalypts for food, medicine, shelter, tools, and ceremony, and the trees' oil-rich, aromatic leaves remain a defining scent of the Australian bush. Because most species were unknown outside Australia until the late 18th century, eucalyptus specimens were prized subjects for the botanical illustrators documenting the continent's newly encountered flora for European science.
