Dated to about 1827-1829, this graphite drawing depicts a fallen horse and a slain knight, a battlefield subject Delacroix returned to in numerous variations across his career. The glistening highlights on the horse's skin and its flamelike mane are hallmarks that recur throughout his lithographs from the same years, and curators have suggested the drawing may relate to an illustration for Shakespeare's Henry VI. It reflects Delacroix's lasting fascination with violent, dramatic motion and the horse as a Romantic subject in its own right.

Jacquard-woven as a soft, double-sided tapestry throw with fringed edges — a warm layer for the sofa or bed.
