This 1828 lithograph belongs to Delacroix's suite of illustrations for Goethe's Faust, commissioned by the Paris publisher Charles Motte to accompany Albert Stapfer's French translation, a project Delacroix conceived after seeing a stage adaptation of Faust in London in 1825. The sheet captures Faust and Mephistopheles riding wildly through the night toward the Witches' Sabbath. French audiences initially met the bold, aggressive lithographs with hostility, but Goethe himself, on seeing them, wrote that Delacroix had “surpassed my own conception” of certain scenes, and the series is now regarded as a landmark of Romantic book illustration.

The shipping was fast and the packing was better than most furniture I have bought. Anyone who loves Delacroix should have Faust and Mephistopheles Galloping Through somewhere in the house. My partner is hard to impress and even he was taken with it. I could not be happier with it.
This is fine for the money and not something I would rave about. It is a fine thing to own and not one I would chase down again.
It looks better in some light than in others. I would like it more at a lower price.

The subject alone sold me and the execution sealed it. Everything that makes Faust and Mephistopheles Galloping Through special survived the reproduction. It transformed an entryway that had felt unfinished for years. I already have my eye on a second one.
This is the second thing I have bought here and both have been good. The detail in Faust and Mephistopheles Galloping Through holds up from a couple of feet away. We keep the porch doors open most of the year and the colors have not shifted. I will be back for another one.
