Made in 1832 in watercolor and graphite, this sheet of four figure studies dates from Delacroix's six-month journey through North Africa as part of a French diplomatic mission to Morocco, the trip that redirected the course of his art. He filled numerous notebooks and loose sheets with rapid studies of the people, dress, and light he encountered, raw material he mined for finished paintings for the rest of his career. Delacroix treasured these North African studies himself, and works on paper from the trip made up a substantial share of what was sold at the posthumous 1864 auction of his studio.
Jacquard-woven as a soft, double-sided tapestry throw with fringed edges — a warm layer for the sofa or bed.
