Captivated by the color, light, and dress of North Africa, he filled sketchbooks with studies of local men, their costumes, and postures, later mining these drawings for major paintings such as "The Women of Algiers." This sheet reflects that formative journey, capturing Delacroix's fascination with a world he considered a living link to classical antiquity.
