Utagawa Hiroshige's "Night Snow at Kanbara," from his celebrated 1833–34 series Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, blankets the town in a hush of falling snow — even though Hiroshige is known to have passed through Kanbara in summer. The imagined scene, rendered in subtle grey tones set against small notes of blue and red, is now considered one of the masterpieces of the series that established landscape as ukiyo-e's major theme.
