The Story in the Margin
This lithograph is the opening plate of Odilon Redon's first Temptation of Saint Anthony series (1888), inspired by Gustave Flaubert's hallucinatory novel of the same name. Redon distilled one of the hermit-saint's fevered visions — a pool of water dissolving into a woman, a temple, a soldier, a chariot of rearing horses — into a single dreamlike image. The print belongs to the Symbolist movement's turn toward the unconscious, using the deep blacks of lithographic ink to conjure visions rather than describe the visible world.
