This small textile fragment preserves part of an eagle-in-roundel design woven in Fatimid Egypt during the 1000s, when Egyptian workshops produced some of the medieval world's finest figured silks. Gold-wrapped thread outlines the bird's outstretched wings within a pearled border, a luxury weaving technique reserved for elite patrons and diplomatic gifts. Today the fragment is held in the Cleveland Museum of Art's textile collection.
