“Capriccio with a Squall on the Lagoon” shows Francesco Guardi's freer, more atmospheric take on the Venetian view — dark clouds gathering over choppy water as boats struggle against the wind. Guardi (1712–1793), who turned to vedute after the death of his brother Gian Antonio in 1760, developed a looser, more painterly style than Canaletto, using quick, flickering brushstrokes to capture weather and light rather than architectural precision. His capricci let him explore mood and drama within the familiar Venetian lagoon.
