Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) painted the Grand Canal — Venice's great winding waterway lined with palaces — many times over his career, favoring its northwestern stretch near the domed church of San Simeone Piccolo. Guardi, the last great Venetian vedute painter, brought a softer palette of creams, pinks and grays to these views than his predecessor Canaletto, capturing the shimmering, unstable light of the lagoon with quick, spirited brushstrokes rather than precise architectural detail.
