Francisco de Goya painted El Médico in 1779 as a full-size cartoon, the working design handed to weavers to produce a tapestry for the royal palace of El Pardo near Madrid. The scene is a warm slice of everyday life: a doctor sits warming his hands over a dish of glowing coals while two students look on, rendered in bold color with a low viewpoint suited to its intended spot above a doorway. It was one of eleven tapestry cartoons Goya delivered to the Royal Tapestry Factory in January 1780, part of the body of work that helped establish him as a rising painter at the Spanish court. Catalogued as NG 1628, the painting has belonged to the National Galleries of Scotland since its purchase in 1923.
Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.
